LANGUAGE ARTS The Towns Project Wikis We are experimenting with wikis. As with Wikipedia, wikis are websites that are open to everyone to edit. For our first wiki experience, we are developing a wiki for each of our towns that we've created in Writing. I have set in place specific categories and sections, with basic directions for how to update and add information about your town. If you would like to add other sections, feel free to do that as well. This is your wiki. (NOTE: Please do not edit anything on a different wiki than your own. Even though this is possible, in this case, please do not. Leave it to the town's creators. Click the links below to go to your town's wiki. You do NOT need to log in to Wikispaces to edit the text on the main page. You DO need the username/password to add images or to create a new page (such as when you add one of your stories and create a new page containing that story. I have tested various flow-chart creation and brainstorming tools, and this is the simplest, most intuitive program I've found. And, it's free! I have asked each group to try to transfer their hand-drawn Character Maps into the VUE program. To do this, the application needs to be downloaded from the Tufts website. It is a cool tool, and several kids have already downloaded it and have begun to figure it out. CLICK HERE to go to the VUE website. It can be downloaded for PC and Mac platforms. Fever 1793 "A Day in the Life": Exploring the Meaning of Clothing in Colonial America Merriam-Websters Dictionary: A good online dictionary and thesaurus. Shelfari: Our class loves Shelfari. We use it to manage our "bookshelves"– books we've read or want to read. We write reviews, have class discussions, and post some of our homework there. Young Writers Project: The YWP is a companion to the National Novel Writing Month ("nanowrimo") non-profit organization. It is a wonderful place where individual kids and teachers with students sign up to take on this incredible challenge: write an entire first draft of a novel in 30 days. Once again this year, I will be working with a group of ambitious – and equally crazy – student writers to take on this monumental challenge. SCIENCE LaunchBall: A super-cool physics game from the British Science Museum. Physics Games: A ton of other nifty physics-based games to play. MATH Cool Math Games: The name says it all. I just played a cool game applying geometric angles to shooting virtual pool. math-drills.com: A good site that includes scores of ready-made worksheets to help with math fact mastery. FRENCH WordReference.com: Mme. Ragen's preferred language translation website. | Documents
