I like to be available to my students and their parents. Some teachers will warn me against too much availability, but I have never had anyone overuse it (calling me at 3:00am, trying to sell me Mary Kay, etc.), so I'll keep doing things as I have been.
To ask me a general question that is not urgent, email works well.
My email address is [email protected].
There are other occasions when you should NOT email me.
1) If you have a homework question for that evening, don't email me. I do not have a smart phone and I'm usually busy in the early evening cleaning up the dinner dishes, helping my kids with their homework, and reading aloud to them before bed. So I don't get to my email until at least 9:00. I am a firm believer that fifth graders should generally be in bed by 9:00, so if you don't get an answer from me until 9:30, your child will be up too late. So...between 4:00 – 9:00, call me. I do not mind a quick call to clarify an assignment (assuming that your child has followed protocol by first calling his or her two Homework Consultants, listed in the back of their agendas). My numbers are: cell: 773.218.2951 home: 773.784.8526
2) The other situation that is not good for email is anything sensitive. If you are troubled by something that has happened at school or with another student, it is fine to email me with a brief description of what is up, but I will tell you now that I have found email to be a poor communication tool for sensitive issues. These are better handled over the phone or, even better, in person. I have learned the hard way the many pitfalls of arguments or intense "conversation" via email.
